Reforestation Efforts Continue
The City of Columbia is continuing to reforest the right of way on our city streets. The Forestry Division plants approximately 450 trees between December and March each year. In addition to replacing the trees that we remove, we are also looking for new sites to plant. Between now and December, I will be compiling a list of these sites and would like your input. If you have a location on the city right-of-way adjacent to your property that needs a tree, please let me know. I have a list of recommended species and I will look at your site with you to determine what type of tree would work best. During the planting season, a flag will be placed where the new tree will be planted. We cannot specify exactly when a particular site will be planted because there are too many variables that dictate our schedule, but I will try to keep you informed. After the trees are planted, we would like your help with watering the trees during the establishment period. If the trees receive adequate water during this first season after planting, they have a much better chance of long term survival. The city will continue to prune and maintain these trees and all other trees on the right of way. If you have any questions, please call me at the Forestry and Beautification office at 545-3860. Thank you for your time and I look forward to working with you in our joint effort to maintain Columbia’s beautiful urban forest.
