Reverse 911

Reverse 911

Many of you may have received a reverse 911 call recently when the Richland County Sheriff Department had information to share about an escaped prisoner. This system was introduced to Columbia recently and allows residents to receive a telephone call to alert them of situations within their area. Reverse 911 combines mapping technologies within 911 data, allowing emergency personnel to activate outbound messages to a targeted area in just a few minutes. Services are currently available for land line telephone customers only. If you use a cell phone instead of a home phone, receive your telephone through a cable or internet service or have a unlisted number, you may wish to opt into the Reverse 911 service. To opt in or find out more information dial the City of Columbia Response Line at 311 or 545-3750.
