Reforestation Efforts Continue
The City of Columbia is continuing to reforest the right of way on our city streets. The Forestry Division plants approximately 450 trees between December and March each year. In addition to replacing the trees that we remove, we are also looking for new sites to plant. Between now and December, I will be compiling a list of these sites and would like your input. If you have a location on the city right-of-way adjacent to your property that needs a tree, please let me know. I have a list of recommended species and I will look at your site with you to determine what type of tree would work best. During the planting season, a flag will be placed where the new tree will be planted. We cannot specify exactly when a particular site will be planted because there are too many variables that dictate our schedule, but I will try to keep you informed. After the trees are planted, we would like your help with watering the trees during the establishment period. If the trees receive adequate water during this first season after planting, they have a much better chance of long term survival. The city will continue to prune and maintain these trees and all other trees on the right of way. If you have any questions, please call me at the Forestry and Beautification office at 545-3860. Thank you for your time and I look forward to working with you in our joint effort to maintain Columbia’s beautiful urban forest. Recycling Program
Those who live within the Columbia city limits now have a way to recycle old electronics, such as computers, printers, televisions, microwave ovens, hair dryers, etc. Simply drop them off between 9:30am and 3:00pm any weekday (except Wednesday) at the Department of Public Works at Slighs Avenue, just off Colonial Drive and Harden Street Extension, near Palmetto Health Richland. You also can keep cardboard and paper out of the landfill by placing them in appropriate receptacles behind DHEC on Bull Street. Questions? Reverse 911
Many of you may have received a reverse 911 call recently when the Richland County Sheriff Department had information to share about an escaped prisoner. This system was introduced to Columbia recently and allows residents to receive a telephone call to alert them of situations within their area. Reverse 911 combines mapping technologies within 911 data, allowing emergency personnel to activate outbound messages to a targeted area in just a few minutes. Services are currently available for land line telephone customers only. If you use a cell phone instead of a home phone, receive your telephone through a cable or internet service or have a unlisted number, you may wish to opt into the Reverse 911 service. To opt in or find out more information dial the City of Columbia Response Line at 311 or 545-3750.Added: 2007-09-08 ... Read More
