Reformation Lutheran Church News

Reformation Lutheran Church has been a fixture in the Earlewood Community for over 80 years and has been a part of the lives of many community residents for decades. The congregation has recently made a commitment to reach out to its community with a renewed sense of responsibility and hope. Reformation is investigating the possibility of becoming a Reconciling in Christ congregation, a congregation which offers a specific Affirmation of Welcome to members of the Gay and Lesbian community. In addition, a new service of worship is being planned for this fall which will incorporate more contemporary praise music as the foundation of the service. The use of a choral ensemble, drums, guitars and other instruments will also be an integral part of the worship. If you have musical talents to share or questions about the congregation’s ministry you can all the church office (252-1507) or Pastor Bill Eiwen (708-8375).

North Main Streetscaping Begins

Friday, April 25, was the groundbreaking for the long anticipated North Main Streetscaping project. Construction is expected to take two years, beginning at Anthony Avenue and continue south to Elmwood Avenue. Improvements we should see once the project is completed include a turn lane at River Dr., textured crosswalks, new sidewalks, pedestrian crossing signals, and decorative mast arm traffic signals. The City's website, www.columbiasc.net will have a link to the project and will contain updates on the progress. It should also contain a traffic report for the upcoming week, so that people may plan their routes accordingly.

Reforestation Efforts Continue

The City of Columbia is continuing to reforest the right of way on our city streets. The Forestry Division plants approximately 450 trees between December and March each year. In addition to replacing the trees that we remove, we are also looking for new sites to plant. Between now and December, I will be compiling a list of these sites and would like your input. If you have a location on the city right-of-way adjacent to your property that needs a tree, please let me know. I have a list of recommended species and I will look at your site with you to determine what type of tree would work best. During the planting season, a flag will be placed where the new tree will be planted. We cannot specify exactly when a particular site will be planted because there are too many variables that dictate our schedule, but I will try to keep you informed. After the trees are planted, we would like your help with watering the trees during the establishment period. If the trees receive adequate water during this first season after planting, they have a much better chance of long term survival. The city will continue to prune and maintain these trees and all other trees on the right of way. If you have any questions, please call me at the Forestry and Beautification office at 545-3860. Thank you for your time and I look forward to working with you in our joint effort to maintain Columbia’s beautiful urban forest.
