Welcome to Earlewood
With over 1000 homes, Earlewood is one of the largest and most diverse neighborhoods in Columbia. Located just north of the central business district, Earlewood is only minutes from the University of South Carolina, The Congaree Vista, 5 Points, and is convenient to all of the city's interstates and major shopping centers.
Earlewood Neighborhood was established in 1910, but the bulk of the neighborhood you see today was built in the 1930s.The neighborhood expanded several times since its original core was established. Some areas of Earlewood reflect building trends of the 1950s and 1960s in street patterns, architectural style, and detailing. Earlewood has continued to grow and evolve throughout its history, which is reflected by its diversity today.
In 2005, Earlewood joined other historically significant neighborhoods of the city to become a design protection area. This important designation will help to ensure that our neighborhood maintains its current charm, and it will continue to prosper as a successful residential community. We hope that the history you are now making in Earlewood celebrates the rich history of this wonderful neighborhood.

Historic Earlewood
Please remember that Earlewood is a Design Protection Area designated by the City of Columbia in 2005. With this designation comes a required review and approval process by the City’s Design/Development Review Commission (DDRC) for new construction, demolition, additions, and enclosures. This is in addition to the typical permitting and approval processes with the City’s Building and Zoning Departments for such activities as altering, repairing, or demolishing an existing structure, or for building fences/walls on the property.
Review and approval by the DDRC applies to all new construction, demolition, additions, enclosures, fences, walls, driveways, and parking within Area A; and it applies to all new construction, driveways, and parking in Area B. The Earlewood Protection Area Design Guidelines, map, and additional detailed information on the process can be found on the Historic Protection Area page
To discuss your project with City staff, call Amy Moore at 545-3335, or visit the City's Development Center at 1136 Main Street.
North Main Streetscaping Project Begins
Friday, April 25, was the groundbreaking for the long anticipated North Main Streetscaping project. This project is expected to take two years. Construction will begin at Anthony Avenue and continue south to Elmwood Avenue. In addition to replacing water and sewer lines, utilities will be buried underground. Once the project is completed, there will be a turn lane at River Dr., textured crosswalks, new sidewalks, pedestrian crossing signals, and decorative mast arm traffic signals. The City's website, www.columbiasc.net will have a link to the project and will contain updates on the progress. It should also contain a traffic report for the upcoming week, so that people may plan their routes accordingly.
